Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone Hosts 2019 Chinese Ambassador Scholarships' Awarding Ceremony and Open House Day

On October 17, 2019, the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone held 2019 Chinese Ambassador Scholarships Awarding Ceremony and Chinese Embassy Open House Day. Prof. Aiah Gbakima, Hon. Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Mr. Al-Hassan Kondeh, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Prof. Foday Sahr, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Prof. Abdullah Mansaray, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Njala University, Dr. Jalloh, Principal of Milton Margai College of Education and Technology, Professor Joseph A. Turay, Vice Chancellor of University of Makeni, Ms. Isata Kormoh, Principal of Fourah Bay College Junior Secondary School, awardees of the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship and over 200 guests from all walks of life including family members of the Chinese Embassy local staff were present.

Ambassador Hu welcomed all the friends to the Embassy. He said that this event is aimed at further enhancing China-Sierra Leone friendship, promoting cooperation and deepening mutual understanding. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 48 years ago, China and Sierra Leone have achieved fruitful cooperation results in various fields, among which education is an important component. Around 120 Sierra Leonean students were enrolled by the Chinese universities under the Chinese Government Scholarships Program this year.

The Chinese Ambassador Scholarships are set up out of the purpose of supporting the students with outstanding academic performance and the friendship grants are meant to support those with financial difficulties. Ambassador Hu awarded 47 students on the event and encouraged them to continue to study diligently and serve their motherland in the future. Ambassador Hu said that "the Chinese government will try her best to contribute to the 'Free Quality Education' flagship program proposed by H.E. President Julius Maada Bio."

On behalf the Sierra Leone government and people, Prof. Gbakima and Mr. Kondeh expressed their appreciation and gratitude for China's long-term support to Sierra Leone in various fields, especially to the "Free Quality Education" flagship program. They wished "the awardees will cherish the opportunity, make persistent efforts, change their destiny through study and inject new vitality into the China-Sierra Leone bilateral friendship."

Colorful interactive activities were arranged on the Open House Day. The guests and participants enjoyed to their hearts' content the Chinese traditional culture such as paper cutting, calligraphy, classical instrumental music and tea ceremony, tasted Chinese food and experienced the free medical consultation provided by Chinese medical teams. They also watched the Tai Chi Fan and folk dance performance by teachers and students of the Confucius Institute at USL, visited the International Photo Exhibition Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of People's Republic of China. The guests were of the view that the Chinese culture is so rich and fascinating, and the historical achievements of the People's Republic of China are admirable. They wished that China-Sierra Leone friendship will be everlasting.
