China Provides Agricultural Materials Assistance to Sierra Leone

On June 20, 2019, the handover ceremony of materials of the 13th Phase of the China-aid Agricultural Technology Cooperation Project to Sierra Leone was held at Ogoo Farm, Freetown. The Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone, Mr. Zhang Xueqian, together with Mr. Samking Braima, the Honorable Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr.Amara Sheriff, Chief Agriculture Officer, Agriculture officers of the Western Area, Bo and Kenema, experts of the Chinese agriculture team, and more than 100 local farmers attended the ceremony.

Counsellor Zhang Xueqian said that since the 1970s, China has dispatched agricultural experts to Sierra Leone to carry out technical cooperation and thousands of local farming households benefited from these projects. The Government of Sierra Leone attaches great importance to agricultural development and is committed to solving the problem of food insecurity. China will continue to work closely with the Sierra Leonean side with a view to helping the latter achieve food self-sufficiency and provide more assistance within its capacity.

Deputy Minister Braima thanked the Chinese government for its selfless assistance to Sierra Leone and stated that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will guide the local farmers to make full use of the aided materials. Mr.Braima spoke highly of the Chinese government and the agricultural expert team for their contributions to the agricultural development of Sierra Leone. Mr. Braima said that President Bio regards agriculture as an important engine for promoting the national development, thus the Sierra Leonean side sincerely appreciates the consistent support and assistance from the Chinese side. Mr. Braima said that Sierra Leone is looking forward to strengthening cooperation in the agricultural sector with China and he wishes the friendly cooperation between the two countries will keep moving forward.

After the statements, Counsellor Zhang and Deputy Minister Braima signed the handover certificates.

According to the exchange of letters between the Chinese Government and Sierra Leonean Government on the 13th phase of the agricultural technology cooperation project, the Chinese side sent 8 technicians to Sierra Leone to carry out seeds breeding, agriculture technology promotion and training on rice and maize cultivation, and provided a certain amount of agricultural materials. The materials handed over this time included Chinese hybrid rice seeds, maize seeds and fertilizer.
