Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone Hosted "China Forum 2018" Symposium

On November 27, 2018, the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone hosted the "China Forum 2018" symposium. The event was comprised of two sessions to discuss topics on Chinese business communities investment in Sierra Leone and China-Sierra Leone cooperation separately. Chinese Ambassador WU Peng, Sierra Leone Chief Immigration Officer Andrew Jaiah Kaikai, representatives from Ministry of Labour and Social Security and National Revenue Authority (NRA), experts from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, representatives from Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Chinese enterprises, Civil Society Organizations and the media attended the said event.

In his speech, Ambassador WU Peng said that the Forum eyes on providing a platform to enhance China-Sierra Leone mutual understanding and cooperation and strengthen official and civil exchanges between the two countries. He believes that the business environment of Sierra Leone will be greatly improved with the new government's commitment to cracking down on corruption and diversifying its domestic economy. He expressed that China will continue to strengthen cooperation with Sierra Leone in line with the priority areas of the New Direction Agenda. He stressed that Chinese investors have injected vitality into the social and economic development of Sierra Leone and the Embassy will continue to protect the legitimate interests of Chinese companies while urging them to abide by local laws to achieve mutual benefits.

On his part, the Chief Immigration Officer, Andrew Jaiah Kaikai, said that Chinese investors are welcome to invest in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leonean MDAs including the Immigration Department will spare no effort to create a good investment environment. He hopes that investors will abide by the laws and comply with relevant requirements by going through the procedures of work and residence permit. Mr. Kaikai expressed gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for its efforts in promoting cooperation between the two countries and guiding Chinese investors operating in Sierra Leone. Afterwards, representatives from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and NRA introduced relevant policies and requirements on doing business in Sierra Leone.

At the forum, Professor ZHU Weidong from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences lectured on The Development of Investment Laws and Environment of Africa and Legal Approaches to Protect Interests of Chinese Companies in Africa, addressing in detail the status and problems on legal protection of investment in Africa, investment disputes and solutions between China and Africa as well as other issues that the investors are concerned with.

Representatives from Chinese business communities in Sierra Leone stated that they will abide by the laws and regulations of Sierra Leone and will support the work of Sierra Leonean MDAs. At the same time, they hope that the Sierra Leonean side will take effective actions to resolve concerns of Chinese investors. Representatives of Civil Society Organizations and the media thanked Chinese investors for creating a large number of job opportunities for the local society and said they are willing to promote exchanges between the peoples of the two countries and help investors adapt to the local market.
